My Russian - up and running?

Привет,

What we can say about Russian that we can be sure of? My answer to it: Russian's alphabet is completely different from the latin one (and consist of 33 letters). That is why, can be perceived as the first (and the most important) hindrance for a person who would love to learn the language. I admit, I have been somehow defeated  by it.... However, I am not saying I deserted. On the contrary, I still fight and I know I will manage to remember it (know a lot so far ;))

One funny thing, when we compare Russian and Polish alphabets is: the same letter, may be different one in both languages. What I mean by that? For example, letter that

looks like "polish" B is actually V in Russian
looks like C is actually S
looks like P is actually R
looks like H is actually N

However, there is also a group of letters that are exactly the same. Hooray!

А, К, М, Т, О

There is only 24 left to learn ;)
(just kidding... I know most of them already)

What are your first impressions about Russian?
Any Russian learners here?
What, in your opinion, is the most difficult to learn?

  1. Russia? Cold, vodka and poor, but happy people! :) After High School I'll can choose German, French or Russian? Maybe, I would chosse Russian if there will be latian alphabet. I really don't like cyrylic alphabet! Every other alphabets are okay, but not cyrylic. :) This alphabet is just ugly for me! I'm sorry for any mistakes. ^^

    5. Of course not. But sometimes we want to postpone the challenge ;) Apart from the fact, that we are not interested in learning those particular languages. For example, I have never felt the urge to learn Chinese or Japanese.

    1. What is difficult in Russian, for a beginner, is an alphabet. When you know it, you understand more ;)

Italian, interesting. Started to learn it already?

  3. It`s really nice to see that somebody was waiting for me, thank you so much!

I have been hunting Russian. I was learning the alphabet and for me is more fascinating than hard. I heard from people who speaks Russian that grammar is complicated.

  4. I started to love Russian when I met my friend from Moscow. You know, I wanted to visit her city and spend there few days.
Now we don't have good contact and Russian isn't as beautiful for me as it was.
Need to say, that I can't agree with your opinion. For me alphabet was one of the easiest things in this language.

    1. The alphabet is the first challenge. You cannot read without knowing the signs. That is why, I wrote it to be crucial and something that may cause difficulties.

Friendship can be a powerful motivator, indeed. When your friends speak some other language, known by both of you, the situtaion becomes more complicated ;) You prefer to speak in English than the target language.

    2. It really depends. My Norwegian friend knows English but still we talk in Norwegian as much as I can. In my opinion if your friend really want to talk with you he won't care about language. The most important thing is having contact with you and if you want to choose this most difficult way of talking, friend will accept it. :)

    3. Yes and no. I usually speak to my Porto friends in Portuguese. Anyway, if I want to communicate something quickly I use English. Mostly because I know much more voc.

  6. I don´t think so that people who chose the same group of languages, now force oneself to learn a language because "it´s in the same group as my favourite one". So for me it´s not easier and achievments aren´t so satisfactory.

    1. Of course, it will help you! But for me it would be a litte boring, choosing similar languages.

  7. I´d love to learn Russian, I always liked very much the Russian culture, literature and history. But the difficulties with the alphabet are great, and being a Brazilian, the language is very different from Neolatin languages. But who knows, maybe in the future I could achieve this dream...
